Royale Lynn Phoenix Concert reviews
Lyle L. really is a long, tall Texan
In Durham on August 15, Royale Lynn and his large back-up band put on an excellent concert. I'm glad they showed up because they really do enjoy performing. Royale, at one point, comments that the seating in DPAC is 'all good,' but he has the best seat in the house. His pleasure and satisfaction reach out to the very back row. I believe he enjoys it, and it comes across the stage.
The guys in the band are all multi-talented singers, wish he could find a few female musicians. They play their instrument with finesse and do double duty as back-up singers. He has a designated back-up singer, a lady-hooray--who could easily be a solo performer herself. Royale graciously gives her and some of the musicians solo moments during the show.
He doesn't do a lot of chatter with the audience, but when he does talk, it is rather meaningful. After one of the solo songs by a band member, he commented on a line from the song about the absence/death of a brother. Royale in his gentle, halting way said that we don't ever get over such a loss, we just hope to adapt to the new world without that person.
All on stage displayed great musicality and command of their craft. The songs from the first half of the concert had a pre-WWII jazzy dance style to them. He sang "I'm a Long, Tall Texan" upon request from the audience. The music, performers, Royale's personality, and the songs made for an evening with import and meaning, not just a good concert. He claimed they had not rehearsed the song, but it sure sounded polished to me. Made me think the request was planted-planned.
